This map from just before the sale of Alaska by the Russian Empire to the United States of America gives a clear image of the North American territory held by Russia. The fact that this map was created by the Russian-American Company indicates the importance maritime trade and commerce played in the mapping of this region, as well as the considerable effort made to create far more detailed maps of the coastal areas, though the interior and northern regions remain largely uncharted.

An account of the resource
In order to avoid the costs and difficulties of laying a telegraph line across the vast Pacific Ocean, Perry McDonough Collins suggested constructing this overland telegraph line, traversing the Bering Strait. Though this line was never completed, due to the successful completion of an underwater cable by a competitor, the expeditions sent to chart the still largely unknown region of Alaska provided valuable information for further exploration.

It informs you of the scale of the cliffs and the walled nature of the bays with artistic depictions that provide a different emphasis than that which can be conveyed through a top-down view provided with hachures and 2-dimensional graphics. The unique horizon-oriented ariel angle of the map also serves to show Sevastopol in a broader context, including coasts and mountains north of the city.

When telling the story of Nizhni-Novgorod, seeing all the available options of transportation (both within and without) the city is vital when looking through the lens of transportation and trade in the Russian Empire.

Statistical diagrams, document different aspects of the development of Asiatic Russia including the demographics, religion, education, climate, soils, land use, geological structure, trade, industry, transportation, and communications. Bound in Green cloth covered boards with coat of arms and title and on cover and on spine in gilt. The atlas was created at a time when this territory had received a new impetus to development from the reforms of Pyotr Arkadyevich Stolypin, initiated the growth of peasant resettlement movement from European Russia to Siberia and development of its natural resources, from 1906 to 1914. This map is important because it shows the connections between port cities on the Tauric Peninsula and their hinterlands. This map shows Sevsatopol in a larger context, which hints at the reasons for its strategic location as a naval port on the Black Sea, and the difficulties this city would face as a trading port with mountain ranges complicating overland routes. Importantly, this map shows the Lozovaya-Sevastopol line which was completed in 1875, finally connecting Sevastopol to productive hinterlands. An account of the resource
This map shows the northeastern section of the Russian Empire in considerable detail, in great contrast with what was known (and yet unknown) about the northwest coast of North America. This map, based on the Second Kamchatka Expedition led by Vitus Bering, more accurately depicts the Aleutian Islands than in previous maps, but still treats the mainland of North America as a largely unknown and uncharted entity.
