<strong>This 19th Century English map of European Russia</strong> is annotated to show the 1892 spread of cholera up the Volga River, spreading 12,000 miles in 12 days from Astrakhan to Saratof to Samara to Simbirsk to Nizhni-Novgorod. This map highlights just how close these towns were to each other. While they had varied methods of quarantine and certainly a wide range of responses from the public to cholera mitigation efforts, Nizhni-Novgorod remains an outlier. As the site of the annual fair with 200,000 visitors buying and selling goods from all parts of Russia and neighboring countries, Nizni-Novgorod was not like-wise restricted and the reported rates of illness and death at this one town are suspiciously low. <br /><br />Follow the visual trail from Astrakhan up the Volga and on the Oka River to Moscow. This visualization makes it impossible to believe that the huge mass of people coming and going out of Nizhni-Novgorod remained healthy. You can see that it would be impossible and cannot be considered a plausible scenario. When you see the progression of the spread and can visualize the closeness of the towns, the question of the fair at Nizhni-Novgorod comes into clear focus. Not the answers, just the questions.<br /><br />The map brings to life the central location that Nizhni-Novgorod provided for water and land based trade. From the Baltic to Central Asia, the connecting of the Volga and Oka River and the Kama River on to the Ural Mountains and Siberia, this location was a hub that provided a perfect trading site. To annotate all the waterways became distracting and even the most elemental reading of this map will bring these water routes into focus without the need for annotations. Clear and plainly marked, this map is a perfect way to see trading possibilities as they were in 1892 at the time of outbreak; it is also a perfect way to start to consider all the possible reasons this fair was allowed to continue year after year, in the heart of cholera outbreaks that closed down the rest of European Russia.

<strong>Caucasus Region circa early 20th century</strong><br /><br />The map selected is a 1918 British military map of the northern and southern Caucasus region. As a result, you will find that map contains names written in English script. Each province on the map is separated by borders in different colors. The primary focus of the region is Dagestan, Georgia and Armenia; all of which were identified as regions with the highest mortality rates as a result of cholera infections in the late 19th century. <br /><br />On the far right side of the map, outlined in yellow is the province of Dagestan. There, bordering the Caspian Sea and the Aspheron peninsula you will find the city of <em>Baku</em> which is largely known for its oil production. According to records in 1888, the total population of Baku is over 108,000. The city is also surrounded by smaller villages such as <em>Baladjari, Sobunchi, Surkhani</em> and <em>Pufa</em>. A checkered black line forms a semi-circle around the city represent a transit line. Small red lines on both the east and the west touching the rim of the coast represent roads that provide access to the city. The blue lines represent rivers of various lengths. <br /><br />Neighboring Dagestan and colored with a purple border is the province of Georgia. Within the center of the province is its largest city <em>Tiflis</em> with a population of 102,000 in 1892. Tiflis was amongst the earliest cities that reached high rates of cholera in the early 19th century. It rests centered between several blue, red and black lines that show an intersection of roads, rivers and trains. The red lines also connect to cities its east such as <em>Manglis</em>, and <em>Kojori</em>. On the west, cities such as <em>Mukhraven, Gambori and Telay</em>. <br /><br />Touching the southern border of Georgia is Armenia. On the far west of the province written in green is labeled “local control Kurds.” In the center and identified using a small black square with diagonal lines filled in the interior is the city of <em>Kars</em>. Black and redlines intersect it indicating that travel is accessible both by trains and by roads. The closest towns consist of <em>Bagnimt, Aladjamt</em>, and <em>Bash Kadikylar</em>. Several cities further east have numbers written underneath them indicating their local population.

Includes descriptive text relating to each plate, and index of about 10,000 geographical names. Maps showing political and administrative boundaries, provinces, regions, types of land ownership, land use, city plans, landmarks, place names, roads, railways, postal routes, telegraph cables, rivers, lakes, canals, and mountains. Relief shown pictorially, by hachures and shadings. Statistical diagrams, document different aspects of the development of Asiatic Russia including the demographics, religion, education, climate, soils, land use, geological structure, trade, industry, transportation, and communications. Bound in Green cloth covered boards with coat of arms and title and on cover and on spine in gilt. The atlas was created at a time when this territory had received a new impetus to development from the reforms of Pyotr Arkadyevich Stolypin, initiated the growth of peasant resettlement movement from European Russia to Siberia and development of its natural resources, from 1906 to 1914.
