An account of the resource
This map of Asiatic Russia tells the story of Russia's vast ethnic diversity. Just saying that the Russian Empire was diverse would be an understatement. Because of Russia's strategic location between Europe and Asia, it has come in contact with a large quantity of different peoples. There are over 120 different ethnic groups recognized in Russia today. The largest of them being Slavs or people of ethnic Russian heritage. This map shows the people groups of Asiatic Russia or Siberia. From the Turkic peoples to the south, The Chukchi in the northeast, and the Russian settlers in the center. The legend in the upper-left corner tells us that there are six ethnic categories and 21 groups (that this map includes.) The first category is Indo-Europeans which consists of Russians (Slavs), and Tajiks. It should be noted that Tajiks are considered by most as a Central Asian race and not an Indo-European race. The next category is the indigenous people of the far northeast region, next to Alaska. These groups are probably the furthest from traditional European Russian culture and these groups have much more in common culturally, Ethnicity and linguistically with Native Americans, especially the Native people of northern Canada. These groups are: Chukchi, Koryaks, Kamchadals, Yukagirs, Chuvans, and others. Both the Mongolian and Tunguska categories were mostly made up of one group. The Buryats for the Mongols and Tungus for the Tunguska. With some other smaller groups. The largest category is the Turko-Tatar Groups. The Turkic people in Central Asia and the Caucasus, according to this map, included: Tatars, Turkmens, Yakoots, Uzbeks, Kara-Kalpaks, Sarts, and Kyrgyzs. Many of the Turkic groups live in what is now modern-day Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Samoyed people groups not to be confused with the dog breed live in north-central Russia and this category consists of: Yooraks, Samoyeds, Tavgytsy, and Ostyak-Samoyeds. The last categories are the Finnish groups. The Finnish groups are very intriguing because they originated in Siberia around the Urals. Then some moved west onto the Scandinavian peninsula and the Baltics. The groups are Ostyaks and Vogels.

This map of European Russia was created by German geographer and cartographer Richard Andree (1835 - 1912). Interestingly, Andree was the son of another well-known and much respected 19th Century German geographer, Karl Andree (1808 - 1875). During his lifetime, Andree’s primary concentration was ethnographic studies, but he is perhaps best known for producing the Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas (Andree’s General Atlas), a popular world atlas first published in 1881 and last published 25 years after his death (1937).
This particular map reflects that of European Russia; authored by Andree and published by the Office of The Times (London) in 1900. This map is important because it defines the area comprising European Russia roughly at the time of the Russian Cholera Epidemic of 1892. Also, this map shows the locations of cities/towns and the primary sources or lines of human communication and/or contact between population centers.
Additionally, this map shows the location of natural resources (e.g., fresh water sources – lakes, wells), as European cartographers would have understood it prior to the turn of the 20th Century. This is important, because access to clean/fresh water would have likely been a mitigation technique to reduce the spread of pathogenic microorganisms that caused (and continue to cause) waterborne illnesses (i.e., cholera).
Because this map comprises the entirety of European Russia east to the Urals and southeast to the Transcaspian region, it is useful in tracking (i.e., date & timestamping) the spread of cholera in Russia, in the year 1892, as described by Dr. Frank Clemcow’s in his article: The cholera epidemic of 1892 in the Russian empire. Furthermore, the locations and features on this map most likely reflect Clemcow’s understanding of the environment during the period of his research 1892-1893. One can follow the lines of communication, quite literally, from the epidemic’s origin in the southwest and chart the disease’s likely vector(s) to the northwest corner of the empire. This map also provides a distinction of available water sources by location.

<p>Choose a map from the <em>Chorographic Sketchbook of Siberia</em>. <a href="https://imperialmap.omeka.fas.harvard.edu/collections/show/8">The candidate sheets are collected here</a>. You might want to page through them all and if you want to go through the whole Sketchbook, <a href="https://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/drs:18273155$1i" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Harvard Library copy is here</a>.<br /><br />Imagine that this map is the only piece of evidence on Earth that tells us anything about that particular space. Imagine, also, that the map will dissolve at midnight on January 5, 2022 and the only record of it will be what you record from your observations. Your task is to provide a thick description of the space depicted on the map. All of humanity is depending on you. And you will likely be required to present your work to Tsar Peter the Great, so you will want to put your best foot forward (or risk permanent exile to.... Siberia).</p>
<br /><br /><p>But don't worry. At this stage, you are only required to compile a list of observations.</p>
<br /><br /><p>Just what sort of observations? You could start with a statement along the lines of "I see a squiggly blue line running horizontally across the page." But deep down you would know that is not what we are after. Or, I should say, it is not what the tsar was after. Instead, you might say some something along the lines of "The river runs north until a non-Russian settlement appears on the left bank."</p>
