Martin mentions a direct quote from Adam Olearius in his travelogue of 1647 that Moscow "shines like Jerusalem fro without but is like Bethlehem within".
Throughout the map, Moscow is made to appear grandiose, orderly, and well kept. However, we know from the text and other evidence in the map that many of the peasants who lived further from the kremlin were humble in their living conditions.
