Many areas of Crimea and the Tavrida Governorate were fruit-growing regions. In particular, the Sudak valley had a reputation for producing delicious grapes, which locals then fermented and turned into light, pleasant-tasting wine (O'Neill, 244-45). Some claimed it was the best wine in Crimea. In her book, Mary Holderness recalled that when she visited a Greek couple in Sudak (Sudac), they offered her wine and homemade preserves, likely made with local fruit (Holderness, 156).
