(King, pp. 146-147) The Treaty of [Kucuk Kaynarca] ended hostilities between Russian and Ottoman forces in July of 1774. As part of this treaty, an accomplishment of Catherine’s military exploits, Russia received control of Kerch and Yenikale. Control of these places gave Russian sailors an access point to the Black Sea. Just by looking at this map, we may be able to infer some military importance about these two places, but we wouldn't know anything about the history of control over the places.
