This map from just before the sale of Alaska by the Russian Empire to the United States of America gives a clear image of the North American territory held by Russia. The fact that this map was created by the Russian-American Company indicates the importance maritime trade and commerce played in the mapping of this region, as well as the considerable effort made to create far more detailed maps of the coastal areas, though the interior and northern regions remain largely uncharted.
